It's Almost November, It's Almost NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo stands for National November Writing Month. It's an online event every writer shouldn't miss. From Nov 1 to 30, aspiring novelists churn out 50,000 words to win the distinction of stringing together 50,000 words! Hopefully, intelligible! Yes, it's that simple! Or is it?

Two years into it and I have yet to finish a novel (50,000 words). But I'm glad to say that I've finished 2 novelettes, 1 got published/serialized in women's magazine. The other is waiting for the publisher's nod. Pls. nod, pls. nod.;p

That said, I can't wait for the nod, I mean for November! Well, both actually.

Can't Get Enough of Boracay!

bday boy jumps for joy

We're back in Boracay and we can't help but jump for joy!

From sunrise

till sunset, we jumped and jumped.

But we couldn't get it perfect, so we settled for a regular stationary group shot.

Despite the drizzles and cloudy skies on our first day,

still we managed to smile. No rain can dampen our spirits for we were in Paradise, our second home. Or at least mine. ;p

Why? Tony's tee says it all!

Day 2
The weather the next day was better, the sun was up!

And we couldn't help but smile.

It was a day to loiter and wade by the beach,

enjoy the scenery,

proud of my shot of the sky, sea and sand

meet goodlooking strangers, like Mr. Mexico,

laze around Boracay Regency pool

and its jacuzzi,

have photo session,

and enjoy the band at Bucos Grill!

Day 3

I've always wanted to try the ATV and since I missed to do so last year, I made sure I did it this year.

And off we go for a trial run.

We all got an A-OK therefore, we can all drive an ATV each.

Our destination, Zorb!

This is where the huge plastic ball will roll with us in it.

Rhei was happy to get in first.

Next went Myles looking like she got stuck!

And there we rolled!

Did we enjoy it? You betcha!

Helmet diving? Let's just say, we all agreed we preferred snorkeling.

We did enjoy the boat ride.

By sunset, we enjoyed the view

 and some appetizers before dinner.

Yum!

Day 4 was our last day, a day for shopping for souvenirs and for one last dip at the beach. But it was high tide and the waves were too strong so we just hung out at the pool.

And that's the end of our trip. Boo-hoo-hoo. Till next year, Boracay!

Oh, let me just say, for this trip, these are my favorite photos (funny category)! ;p

A Day in the (College) Life of Sandy

excerpt from The Amazing Adventures of Sandy & Her Dog Dodo

One Little Miracle
May 2011

I was feeling low this early morning. As I entered the auditorium for my NatSci class, I scanned the huge hall for familiar faces. Finding none, I chose a seat at the back close to the door so I can discreetly leave whenever I want to.

Wanting to cheer myself up, I scanned the huge room for a glimpse of my crush. But I couldn't spot him so I said a silent prayer to God. I said, I wish I'd see him today. Then I thought, what are the chances that God would listen to me. He's probably busy with other important stuff. Why should He care about a petty matter as my seeing David today. And in this crowd of 1 million (alright, I tend to exaggerate.) loonies, I doubt.

But lo, I did see him. And how? There were 3 screens onstage that day. It was not a regular class. Our professor looked pumped for a mega marathon lecture. You'd think all screens will be used for his presentation but no, one camera was devoted to show the audience. I don't know why. But my guess is so that the class will be attentive to his lecture. Really?

As the presentation progressed, the camera rolled and my classmates kept smiling at the camera especially when they catch themselves onscreen. There were snickers and giggles, and of course, our lecturer got annoyed. Then some classmates got brazen and started waving at the cam, making the rest chuckle. Prof. X got so pissed at our immaturity and without warning, stormed out of the room. But who's more juvenile now?

You'd think, the class would feel sorry but no, we actually erupted in laughter. His immaturity went well for us. His walk-out meant dismissal. We were so relieved, we got off early. I just hope he doesn't give a surprise quiz next meeting. Knowing him, that's probably how he'll get his revenge at us.

But before I sign off, I did see him, my crush. He was flashed on the screen not only once but twice! I believe the first one was for God to let me know that, He listens to mundane prayer requests such as mine and that, yes, crushie was in the room. But since the shot was too tight, almost a close-up, he had to be shown again another time. The second time was a bit far so I got to spot where he was. After class, I got to position myself so he would pass by me at the aisle and we got to say hi and chat a bit. Heaven!

Thank you, Lord for my little miracle today! ;p

awaiting fate

march 2012

3 weeks from now, the english dept. of stanford university will announce its new list of stegner fellows. i am so interested because i am one of the hopefuls. either way, i think will die of faint. if i make it, i'll die of joy. if i don't make it, i'll die of embarrassment. but between the 2, i prefer to meet death joyously.

this isn't new to me. 100 years ago, i took a qualifying exam in the university of the philippines for my college education.the passing rate is about 10-15%.and i made it. the chances for this stanford scholarship though is slimmer. what are my chances? i'm up against 1,900 writers around the world and stanford will only take in 10 scholars.how's that?!

so today, i feel like i'm back in march 1991 a highschool senior awaiting my fate. will i make it? i wish it were april 2 already.

A Day in the (College) Life of Sandy

excerpt from The Amazing Adventures of Sandy & Her Dog Dodo

April 2011
Not a good time to be seen by him

It was another regular summer day in the campus. As I took a one last look at myself in the mirror, I smiled because I liked the striped black and purple top I was wearing. I looked good in it. Knowing I looked good, I felt good. But knowing very well how cold it can get at the amphitheater where my Econ 11 class is, I blindly grabbed the first cardigan I found in my cabinet. I had to hurry because I was running late for my class.

Apparently, the knit top I got a hold of was light caramel. This color didn’t go well with my top plus the cut wasn’t flattering. Oh well, better that than freezing inside the theater, I consoled myself. I figured I’d just wear it inside the hall and take it off right after I get off my seat before anyone I know sees me. Good plan except that I forgot to execute it. And the first person I see as I stepped out of the room is him.

He sees me, recognizes me and flashes his 100-megawatt smile in an instant. Oh my gosh, he remembers me. There were close to ten of us girls introduced to him last week and yet he recognized me. Oh! That’s when I realized, I was wearing my crummy Bertha cape which made me look fat and disgusting. Ok, maybe not disgusting but really, unflattering. I almost froze in terror. In my embarrassment, I ignored him, looked the other way and pretended not to remember him.

What a pity, I saw his smile vanish and turn into a frown. Oh shoot! Nice one, Sandy! I could only mutter softly, sorry.

musings on my way to work

I just realized that the older we get, the faster time goes by, the shorter a day becomes.

When we were kids, a day seemed to go by soooo slowly. Waiting for my birthday or Christmas seemed so distant. Even waiting for a month, a week, a day, an hour. But now that I'm older, it seems like time is zipping by so fast. Didn't we just celebrate New Year and now, it's almost June?

Does time fly because we are older and wiser? What made us wiser? Is it time? Over time, we have learned more, given our experiences. Is it because we now know better and so we have become more patient? Does it mean that the older we get, the more patient we become (or at least compared to when we were kids). We also become more patient of people, of waiting of this and that even waiting for our dreams to be fulfilled, for God’s plans to unfold. And so, being older, more experienced (wiser), more patient, time becomes "shorter"?

Which led me to think, that's probably why God is so patient and wise because He is as old as Time. That's why "In His Time" seems so long for us, His kids, because we are not as old, wise and all-knowing as He is. We are not as old as time and can never be as wise and as all-knowing as He is. No one will ever be.

We are like children crying out to our father or mother, I want to blow the candles on my birthday cake already! I want to open my Christmas gifts under the tree already! I want to swim even when I just ate lunch. Because we are impatient and do not know yet the essence of time. We do not understand that these things are meant to be done on a certain time, at the right time. That right timing is key.

When we complain and whine that our life is not shaping up as we want it to. That we have not acquired what we want to have, or become the person we want to be, or found that person we want to be with. He is unperturbed. Like a loving Father, He listens and smiles and gently says, it is not yet time.

And like little children, we sulk. When we were little, sometimes, we obey our parents despite of our strong will to do otherwise. And so when we are finally allowed to open our gifts after Noche Buena, what joy we have! How sweet our smiles!

But sometimes, we rebel and become forceful and do as we please and even if we like the gift, because we know we opened it too soon against the will of our parents, our joy is not complete because we do not have our parents' blessings. Because there’s that guilt that we’ve crossed or offended them. If only we waited a little while.

And so it is also with Our Father. Our joy will only be complete if it our actions are done according to His Will. Thus, this is when our faith plays an important role. If we have faith in Him, that He knows what is best for us. That In His Time, things will fall into place then we can be at peace, calm and unperturbed even when our dreams, plans and aspirations are not yet here. Or even when it is not within our reach. For our faith in Him will become our source of peace and thus, joy and bliss.

I believe this, that all our heart’s desires will come true…in time. And if it doesn’t, it’s ok because I know He always has a better plan ;p

The Amazing Camiguin-Bukidnon-CDO Adventure

It was in the hot summer of 2011 when Rhei and I set out for Camiguin, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro City (CDO) with the ff. goals in our minds: tour the beautiful island-province of Camiguin, conquer zipline at Dahilayan Adventure Park in Bukidnon and the white water rafting in CDO all in one long weekend with friends and balikbayans from Canada.

So, off we went with our cameras, of course!

PART 1: CHARMING CAMIGUIN

We were all excited as we started the first leg of our Amazing Adventure. At the CDO airport, we were met by our driver/tour guide, whom we hated at first, because we thought he was not careful in driving and was racing and honking all the time. But in the end we loved him for the same reason. We are crazy people.

To get to Camiguin, we drove to the pier and traveled for an hour or so by boat.

Camiguin has 2 hot springs, 2 cold springs, 2 falls,  1 soda swimming pool (the only 1 of its kind in the country).

I had to check this site http://www.camiguin-island.com/camiguin-volcanoes.shtml for the numberof volcanoes in the province. It lists 7 volcanoes, most famous is Mt. Hibok-Hibok.

White Island, attracts many tourists

including us.

A view of the C-shaped island from our boat

It is actually a sandbar, where the sand is really white

and the water, clear-blue.

It's nice to take a dip

take pics

pose for a photo

ala-Ms.Camiguin,

have a picnic or just sit, admire and take in the picturesque scenery.

Next stop

At first glimpse of the falls, all we could say was, Wow!

After getting over our fascination, the girls dove right in. Apparently, it's cold!

Before leaving the rich, green and peaceful island of Camiguin,

we made stops at the Bura Soda Swimming Pool, Hibok-hibok hot springs

and the Sunken Cemetery.

This cemetery is marked by the huge cross. It went underwater when Mt. Vulcan Daan erupted in 1870. You can actually go to the solemn place by boat but we chose to just watch from afar and sample their barbecue.

Is that chicken feet? Rhei says, yum, yum!

Even without our driver/tour guide telling us that Camiguin has zero crime rate, you can feel the serenity of the place. Its people, as townspeople are in the country are warm, always ready with their genuine smile. Just as we were curious of them, of their lifestyle, so were they of us.

PART 2: BLESSED LAND CALLED BUKIDNON

It's but lovely, the place verdant, the climate cool. Why haven't I been here before? It's got pine trees and  temperature like that of Baguio City minus the pollution and traffic.

We've always known Bukidnon for its Del Monte pineapple plantation. But it didn't occur to me it was this vast. Miles and miles of pineapples.

Left and right, here and there, there's pineapple everywhere.

We thought why not get a closer look

and maybe pick one?

Our driver said, you could actually do that before. Just pick for free. But anymore.

But he also said, we can look for pineapples that the pickers dropped behind.

Little Miss got lucky! Pffbtt!!!

Now, for what we came here for,

zipline at the Dahilayan Adventure Park,

http://www.dahilayanadventurepark.com/ which advertises itself as Asia's longest dual cable zipline (840 meters).

That's the longer and more thrilling one because you start at the top of the hill. Like an eagle!

Here's the lame version (340 m + 150 m) but fun as well.

All set and waiting for their turn

And now, the winners

as judged by Sachi,

drumroll please,

Rhei for Best Toothpaste Smile Award

Mommy M for I Conquered My Fear of Heights Award
(It took her awhile to fly away and when she finally did, she screamed and screamed and screamed. That's why she looks exhausted. Kidding.)

And Little Miss for Best Photo Award
(You're wearing red nail polish? Kikay!)

After this, we all had our fill at the Del Monte Golf and Country Club where bottomless pineapple juice was served for only 20 or 40 pesos only. Sorry, my memory is failing me. We all took advantage of it and each had an overload of vitamin C that day. But that's not the best part of our lunch, the steak and burgers are divine. But since I was then avoiding meat, I could only smell the tasty meat and salivate. I will go back soon and have my revenge.

PART 3: CRUNCH TIME IN CDO

Back in CDO, we started the last day of our trip with heavy breakfast for the "race" ahead. We had a river rafting scheduled in the morning, we had to check out by noon at the hotel (later extended to 1pm) and catch our flight at 3pm. While having breakfast, it seemed attainable and we were on high spirits. But we got delayed in the river because of the traffic in the city, so we had to call up our travel agent to arrange with the hotel to extend our check-out for 3 rooms, drop by the river rafting organizer to pick up the cd of our video and pics, and ask our driver to do what he does best, drive us recklessly to the airport. Which he did very well.

But that's getting ahead of the story.

All set for our river adventure. Rhei felt like dancing

while Little Miss couldn't hide her tongue, este, her excitement. Who else is not hiding? Tita eSCee, who couldn't help but bare her legs in her ultra-super-mega short shorts. Rosee got inspired.

This is it. We're in the boat, no backing out now. Not even Little Boy E.

We cannot just sit like princesses, we had to paddle too.

After navigating a few rapids, we were quite proud of ourselves and happy.

Boy, was it really hot. Our guide had to frequently splash water on us to keep cool.

And we liked it.

After getting the hang of traversing the rapids, we braved to stand on our feet.

Seeing how calm the water is on this part of the river, Little Miss is wanting to jump.

The kids are hungry, their moms came prepared with buns.

Conquering river wild

Scary!

Look, we're ahead. We're winning!

And finally, end of the line.We did it! Ahooo-ahooo!!!

Next time we visit, we're ready for Advance level.

This is us after - all spent, wet, and hungry but never too tired to smile for the camera. We all agreed it was our best trip ever!
